Welcome to Cedar Class! Bienvenidos!
September 2015
Welcome back to the new school year! Cedar class have made a fantastic start to the
term. We have spent some time in the first few weeks establishing routines and getting to know the class and the children have settled into Year 5 really well.
READING AT HOME
All the children have received their new reading records and have chosen new home reading books. Reading records will be checked every Friday, although your child needs to bring it every day as they may need to use it at other times during the week. Please ensure that your child is reading every school night for at least 20 minutes and commenting in the reading records. It’s great to read their comments, and yours, and it helps us to find out the type of texts they enjoy, as well as evaluating their understanding.
LEARNING TIMES TABLES
Learning times tables is really important for your child as a quick recall of multiplication facts can support their learning in other areas of Maths. We would like you to support your child with learning their tables regularly, up to 12 x 12.
CURRICULUM
The first few weeks of this term are focusing on working together as a class and how to be a good learner. We are planning a new curriculum this term, with ideas coming from the children. They will be working with an artist to create lots of exciting learning activities. We will send you an overview in a few weeks’ time so you know what your child will be learning and can help your child at home.
P.E. HAPPENS EVERY WEEK
We are really lucky to be working with a sports coach each Wednesday afternoon. We will also be having PE sessions every Friday afternoon. This half term the children will be able to choose between football and hockey. We may have additional PE sessions throughout the week and therefore your child should bring the PE kit on a Monday and leave it in school until Friday.
WE HAVE HOMEWORK
We have homework every week, which is kept in the ‘What’s New Books’. This will be given
out on a Friday. This must be completed by the following Wednesday when children will have the opportunity to go through and reflect on the homework in class. Homework may not always be a written or Maths task but could include a research activity or discussion question. We will also be having spelling sessions every Friday. After each session, children will bring home spellings to learn for a test the following Friday.
