School Council 2013 -2014
The School Council is made up of two pupils from each class years 2 – 6. Mandy Bishton chairs the meetings and makes sure that everyone in school is kept informed of their activities. Each class holds an election for the positions at the beginning of the new school year.
The Subway Mural is Finished
After many months of planning and 5 days of hard work and committment, the subway is finally finished. Through out the week, members of the public who walked through the subway made positive comments on how much better this mural made the local environment look. One passer by even stopped and asked if he could help, even returning the next day to help again.
All the pupils are now finding their journey through the subway more interesting, colourful and enjoyable. They like to spot their own hand prints and are keen to show their families and friends what they have achieved. Everyone at Dunkirk feels very involved, happy and proud to have been part of such an exciting project. This accomplishment has made a big difference within the local community and is creating a great talking point.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this big achievement. We would particularly like to thank the Dunkirk School Council and Mandy Bishton;Friends of Dunkirk; the Highways Agency; Dunkirk and Lenton Forum; A one + who cleaned the graffitti off and local councillors who supported the project throughout.
A special thank you to Claire and Kate, our artists who coordinated and offered their creativity and expertise and time all week.
A massive thanks to all the parents, friends, volunteers and families who gave up their time to get involved and get painting!

School Council and Pupil Voice – Mandy Bishton
January 2012
We have a new School Council each year comprising of 10 children from Oak class through to Banyan class.
In September each class votes for two pupils to join the School Council to represent them and give each pupil a chance to voice their opinions and be heard.
In October two year 6 pupils organised a presentation in front of local people at the Dragons Den in Lenton and were awarded £100 towards aprons to protect the children’s clothing when they paint the mural in the Subway.
The week beginning 26th March the Artist will be coming into school to work with all classes to create and paint the mural which will have a Jungle theme.
This will be an exciting experience for all our children and parents can get involved too.
This has taken a long time to organise because so many outside agencies have been involved including the Highways Agency.
This is a chance for our children to make a difference in the community and make it a more exciting, vibrant place to be.
In December the School Council and the Playground Buddies merged their meetings with Mr Wooding’s chairing them so they could arrange the sale of fruit at break times. This is part of our Healthy School initiative.
The children take it in turns to sell the fruit each day at first play. They really enjoy the responsibility and trust we put in them.
The School Council were asked to come up with ideas for Attendance Challenge treats for the children who get 100% attendance for this half term. They certainly rose to the challenge and came up with some wonderful ideas.

Recent Activities
We have been working with the ECO club and have recently done two canal tow path clean ups with the local Police, British Waterways, Capital One and local volunteers. We collected at least 15 black bags of rubbish and a carpet! We felt very proud when passers by applauded us and said "Well done!"
The current focus is improving our local environment. The subway next to the school has become vandalised with graffiti and is an unwelcoming pathway to our school. Working together with the Police Community Officer, Carol, and the Lenton Forum, the School Council are working on strategies to clear up the subway.
Subway Mural Update
Our School Council met with the Wednesday Parents group and Fiona (Dunkirk and Lenton Forum), Karen (PCSO) and Clare our School Artist on 29th February. Please follow the link to see the minutes below.
