Dunkirk are Carbon Detectives
Dunkirk has signed up to become a Carbon Detective. This has involved the school in finding out what it's carbon footprint is per child and what we are our future actions are to ensure we are not making too big an impact on our environment. We have been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for 2011/2012 and we have won third prize nationally for all the actions we have undertaken so far to lessen and improve our footprint. Please visit the website to see our profile and images. Click on the competition link and see our achievements. Our link school in Pakistan, The Lahore Lyceum is also taking part in this survey and has completed a survey to see whether their footprint is greater or less than ours! Watch this space for more details.

Energy saving and reducing our carbon footprint
As an Eco School we want to reduce our impact on the planet. As part of this we have been involved in a project called Score. We have had a smart meter fitted and have monitored our electricity over the past couple of terms.
Measures that we have taken have included taking light readings with a Lux Meter to establish reasonable light levels to work in. Using the window blinds more effectively needed and not switching on lights. We have labeled our light switches to indicate which ones should be switched on and which ones are unnecessary. We have had new switches fitted to our water boilers to give us more control when they come on and go off. All staff and pupils are far more proactive at switching electrical equipment off standby mode.
All these actions have meant that our total annual savings could be in the region of £1349 or 8 Tonnes of carbon dioxide.
