Oak class are sowing seeds and growing vegetables this spring. Ask your child to tell you about what they learn. The plan is to film all the processes and eventually eat the produce. Look out for the film on this web site.
January 2016 MULTIPLICATION OLYMPICS-Each week your child will be practicing for their timed quiz which will take the children on a journey of 2,5 and 10 times tables through to division of these facts and then to the 3, 4 and 6 times tables. We will however keep it fun and your child will remain on the tables they need to master before moving on. We do work hard to keep it fun and rewarding!
Week Beginning 9th Nov- Check out your 'What's New Homework Book' because Addition & Subtraction Quiz will start on Friday. SO GET PRACTICING!
Thursday 1st October- Oak Class will be learning OUT-SIDE in the Discovery Garden.
Please dress up warm and wear strong shoes or boots. We have some if you need...
Monday 28th will be our PEACE ONE DAY. Please ask your child about the poem they will write AND take a look at our curriculum page for a short film as they perform it!
Welcome Back. We hope you had a good summer.
My name is Mark Woodings. I am the Assistant Head and I have been working at Dunkirk for many years. I am looking forward to welcoming your child into Year 2, Oak Class. It is important to make this whole settling in process a smooth one. If you have any worries or concerns, please let me or Ms Nabila know straight away, I am nearly always available after school. Ms Nabila is the Oak Teaching Assistant and has recently joined us. The Year 2 curriculum makes greater demands on your child, but we will endeavour to continue to support and encourage your child at all times and help them achieve their very best. Mrs Clarke will teach in class every Wednesday as I perform my Assistant Head Teacher duties.
During these first three weeks, my priority is to show the children where all the learning resources are kept and what my expectations are for good listening, thoughtful attitudes and hard work. There will be lots of fun games and activities designed to develop friendships and children’s confidence.
Every day we teach reading in the literacy lesson. This is often in Guided Reading groups and is very targeted and involves lots of talking and questioning in small groups all reading copies of the same book. Reading at home will continue to be essential if progress is to be accelerated. I have seen how this practise helps children speed along. I have also seen how lack of this practise lead to children falling behind.
Maths will involve weekly problems to solve and quick mental arithmetic. Please support your child to learn their number bonds and 2, 5 and 10 times tables, they are so important. I will encourage your child to be increasingly independent. Your child should talk about his/her “targets” that they are working towards to enable them to improve. We will inform you of these targets and discuss your child’s progress regularly.
In order to promote Healthy Lifestyles, we are carrying on with ‘Healthy Snacks’, as dictated by the children a few years ago! Basically, no sweets or crisps for playtime, just a piece of fruit or equivalent.
Milk and Fruit provides an essential bit of energy mid morning. Please let me know if you provide an alternative for your child. Soya milk can go in our fridge BUT PLEASE LABEL to avoid mix ups! The only other drink we allow is water. Your child needs a distinctive bottle – NAMED CLEARLY. Your child will then be responsible for regularly refilling this and you can periodically take this home to clean!
Swimming will not take place until 2016.
Please bring a PE kit on Monday and take home on Friday infact it can be left here all the time. It is always useful to have it in school. Your child will NOT be allowed to take part without one!! NAMES NEED TO BE IN ALL ITEMS OF CLOTHING! It is virtually impossible for me to hunt around for lost, unnamed jumpers and shirts.
The best thing you can do to help your child to progress is regular reading AND support weekly homework in the ‘What’s New Book’. This reinforces and informs you of what we do each week. I am hoping for 100% return on this because of how effective it has been in encouraging independence and supporting progress year upon year. I send them home on Fridays and we go through them in the week.
I will see you all very soon at our first Parents’ Evening.
