Rushcliffe Country Park visit
Mango really enjoyed going to Rushcliffe Country Park. We went tree and leaf hunting, on the ladybird trail, on the pirate park and exercise machines, in the sensory and sound garden, and even did a flash mob in front of lots of people and Mrs Alford.
Protest Art Exhibition
Mango have been working with Miss Claire to create some protest art that will be exhibited in February half term in an art gallery - time and place to be confirmed. The children talked about protests around the world as well as what they strongly believe in and what they would like to protest about and how.
In Mango we have been looking at needs and wants. We decided what things were most important to help us survive and what things we just wanted because they were nice and fun. We decided that we needed food the most and toys the least but wanted toys and chocolate the most and a small house the least.

LITERACY
We are going to be looking at report writing about the Tudors compared to the modern day Royal Family, as well as how the UK was ruled during Tudor times compared to today. We have also been looking at the needs and wants of children, adults, animals and plants linking to our Greed and Power topic.
To help at home, please support your child in practising their Year two connectives (but, and, then, so, because, when and after) as well as different types of punctuation like full stops, capital letters, commas in a list, exclamation marks and question marks.
NUMERACY
We will be concentrating on number work in the first term, including adding and subtracting in different ways such as using number lines, partitioning, place value, counting on and back and using resources to support us. We will also be practising our times tables.
To help at home, please support your child in practising their Year two times tables (2x, 3s, 5x, and 10x)
CURRICULUM
As part of our Greed and Power topic we will be looking at different rulers in history, such as Henry V111, as well as fictional rulers, such as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.
We will also be creating our own characters from Mr Men and writing stories about them, as well as greedy and powerful characters in different fairy tales.
Our linked science themes are animals and their habitats, and how powerful animals can be, as well as materials, for which we will be designing a waterproof hat for the Mad Hatters Tea Party in Alice in Wonderland.
P.E. REMINDER
Please leave your PE kit at school throughout the week and take it home to wash at the weekend. We do PE anytime throughout the week rather than at set times. Currently we are doing hockey as a class, and tennis and gymnastics with coaches. Please bring clothing appropriate for indoor and outdoor PE.
HOMEWORK REMINDER
We send homework home on a Friday and go through the homework together on a Wednesday. This homework is linked to the work we are doing in class. Please also read each night with your child and write in their diary, as well as helping them practise their timetables.
ALLOTMENT / OUT & ABOUT
We often go to the allotment, school field, or nearby park as part of our curriculum, so please make sure your child has sensible shoes and warm clothing that can also protect them if it rains.
Please let us know if you would like to come into school and help at anytime or if you would like to join our parent/carer group ‘Friends of Dunkirk’.
If you have any questions or queries please come in and see us.
We are all looking forward to this exciting term.
Yours sincerely
Jamie Curtis

In the last couple of weeks, Mango Class have been learning lots of new things, and we've also had lots of fun!!
Maths
We have been practicing our times tables and learning about 2 and 3 digit numbers! We
have been learning about place value and using hundreds, tens and units to support our understanding.
We have also been ordering numbers from the smallest to the largest and have been using
the greater than and less than sign to record our work. Our class crocodiles help us to remember which way our signs need to go!
Literacy
We are currently reading ‘This is the Bear’ and we have been sequencing and retelling the story. We have made our own character puppets to help us remember the story with our new puppet theatre!
In Mango Class, we are starting to plan and write our own class story. We have been looking at the beginning, middle and endings of stories and have been describing settings and characters. So far, we have planned the story, 'This is the Grandma'. You will be able to read our class stories at Parents Evening!
Science
This term we are learning about Health and Growth. We have been talking about the different food groups and what would make a healthy balanced meal. In our cooking sessions we have been making delicious foods containing ingredients from the different food groups! We have also been looking at the different parts of the body and labelling our human puppets. We have investigated what happens to our bodies when we exercise and why it is important to keep fit.
