We have been having lots of fun in Fig class observing all the changes to the environment that Autumn brings... We have spent time making fat balls to feed the birds over winter. We hope that if we are very very quiets we might even see some birds feeding from them while we are in school!
We had fun making some clay spiders...
Welcome to Autumn term 2015 in Fig class, below you will find information about teaching and learning in Fig class; What we teach, how we teach it and photos of your child learning through play.
Our ethos....
'Play is the highest form of research' Albert Einstein.
At Dunkirk we passionately believe in learning through play. We follow the Development Matters curriculum which provides the framework for all early years education across the country. Learning is split into 7 areas: Personal, social and emotional development, Physical development, Communication and language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the world and Expressive arts and design.
Through play children can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments.

How do we teach...
Parents often ask how we teach specific areas of learning. Please take a look below to find out how we teach Maths, Literacy and Communication and Language.
Communication and Language
The ability to communicate is fundamental to your child's whole education. By developing a wide and diverse vocabulary and the ability to express themselves effectively your child will succeed throughout their school career. We ensure the development of these skills by reading a variety of stories, singing, telling poems, playing talking and listening games and by carrying out phonics lessons and guided reading sessions. For children who have English as an additional language or a special educational need, we ensure that we offer a variety of forms of communication through Makaton sign language through to visual stimuli used alongside verbal cues.

Maths
In Fig class we teach Mathematics by modelling mathematical language and processes, particularly during registration, then supporting the children to develop these skills in practical situations. We often use nature and the world around us to find numbers, shapes and patterns and collect objects to help us learn how to count. We use construction and box modelling to help us learn about shape, size and positional language. Cooking and baking are fantastic ways to help is learn about weight, volume and capacity, following a particular sequence of events and using equipment to measure time. On top of this we love singing a variety of nursery rhymes to help us learn about numbers and subtraction.

Literacy
Again we model reading and writing in everything that we do with the children in Fig class. These skills are used throughout your child's day in Fig, from being able to write their name on their latest piece of art work, to writing out a prescription for tooth medicine in the dentists role play area. We ensure that there are always quiet areas both indoor and outdoor where your child can go and read by themselves or with friend. Alongside this we engage in specific phonics teaching which helps support your child learn to read and write following the 'Letters and Sounds' program.
