Willow Class Newsletter January 2012
Dear Parents / Carers,
The children in Willow class have come back after the holiday with enthusiasm and a keenness to be involved in lots of new activities. We are extremely pleased with the way the Reception children have embraced the challenge of swimming, the first session appears to be a wonderful success. Please check out the ‘What’s new board’ for photographs and some of the children’s drawings.
Our main topic focus for this term is ‘Trees’. The children have already visited Highfields Park and climbed the large rhododendron bushes and compared the height of trees in the park. As we work through the term the children will observe different types of trees, look at the work of artists who have studied trees and represent trees in creative ways. The trees in the local area will provide a great stimulus for creative work and help the children to develop mathematical skills linked to measurement. We will pay attention to the different heights and widths of trees in relation to other things in the environment; helping the children to understand and use the mathematical language of measurement. We will continue to take the children on ‘adventures’, using the school mini bus; exploring a variety of places to look for trees. Please ensure your child always attends school with a warm coat because we will aim to get out and about in the local environment, even if the weather is cold. School waterproofs and wellingtons are provided.
Labelling Clothing
Putting your child’s name in their clothes – particularly coats, hats and swimming things will help avoid some problems with lost clothing items – especially as they regularly end up in the home corner / on the floor etc!
Snack/Lunch Money
Thank you to all the parents who regularly give the 50 pence donation needed to buy weekly snack and ingredients.
We collect 50p snack money from each child every week to buy ingredients for baking and cooking. The children thoroughly enjoy these activities and we need your contributions to make them happen!
Please hand the money to your child’s register group leader on a Monday.
Any lunch club or dinner money also needs to be given to your child’s register group leader on a Monday – in an envelope with the amount and your child’s name written on please.
Parent and child cooking and baking parties
The purpose of these sessions is to encourage parents and children to cook/ bake together in a friendly supportive environment, enabling them to learn new skills together and meet other families in the school. The sessions take place on Tuesday and Friday, and it has been a pleasure to see families getting involved. The project has been running for 3 years and continues to be a great success due to the enthusiastic commitment of many parents. Please come and talk to Miss Cresswell if you would like to get involved.
Willow Class lending Library
Many parents and children are already making good use of our selection of books to share at home. They are in a trolley near the door so that children can choose their own book with ease. You do not have to sign the books out but please only take one at a time to ensure there are enough for everyone.
Your child will love to share a book with you for a short time every day and this will develop in your child a love of reading as well as an awareness of the skills needed to read.
If you have some spare time and would like to come and listen to children read in Willow class please speak to a member of staff.
