18TH January 2012
Dear Parents/Carers
Welcome to Palm Class, and for those of you who are new, welcome to Dunkirk Primary School. Palm Class have settled in well after Christmas and it has been a pleasure working with the children. It is an important and exciting time of the year and to help your child continue to settle in, here are a few things that you need to know for the spring term!
PE:
Your child needs to bring their PE kit on a Monday morning and take it home on a Friday. Although Friday will be our normal PE day there will often be other days where a PE kit is required. Also, we will mainly be inside during the winter, but on occasion we may go outside, so please bare this in mind with your PE kit choices. Your child will need:
· Trainers/Pumps
· Socks
· Shorts/Leggings/jogging bottoms
· Vests/T-Shirt/long sleeved top
For your child’s safety it is important that they have a PE kit in school. Please note that for safety reasons jewellery should not be worn. If your child is unable to do PE on any day could you please let us know in the morning or send a note with your child. We are unable to accept verbal explanations from children alone.
Swimming:
Palm will also be carrying on with swimming every Tuesday afternoon up until May half term. Your child will need:
· Towel
· Swimming costume/trunks
· All jewellery REMOVED
· A letter for goggles if your child wants to wear them
We expect all children who are at school to be well enough to swim and we require a letter from your GP if they are to be excused for medical reasons.
If you would like to volunteer to be a ‘spotter’, please let me know on a Monday after school, as we can only have two volunteers at a time.
Reading Books:
Your child will continue to bring their reading book and diary home each evening; please read with your child as often as possible - 10 minutes each night is very beneficial. After reading with your child please make a comment in their reading diary, bring the book to school and your child can then change it for a new book. Your child should bring their book and diary to school EVERYDAY whether they have read that evening or not.
Homework:
Homework is sometimes sent home on Friday in your child’s “What’s New” book. The aim is to make the homework fun and educational whilst involving you as parents or carers. This book is also a chance for you to write to us and make any comments you wish to pass on. We will also use it to pass on details on what we are covering in class such as current topics. On occasion there will be some extra things we will ask you to do but we will send details out when that occurs.
Daily homework is that children should read with their parents/carers each evening and talk about what they have read. Please also continue to practise Bear words, times-tables and telling the time.
As always we are making a plea for all clothes (including PE kit and shoes) to be labelled with your child’s name. Already this term we have had a number of occasions where clothes have gone missing and when items have been found there is no name.
Class work:
This term we will be learning about animals, non-fiction texts, The Gruffalo, labels, how to look after our teeth, growing plants and stories from other cultures, amongst other things…if you have any creative ideas/expertise that link to these topics, then please do not hesitate to come and have a chat with me….I have already had some parents telling me about their weird and wonderful pets that they would like to teach the children about themselves and have volunteered to come in.
Snack time
As Dunkirk is a ‘Healthy School’ we would like to just give a gentle reminder that chocolate bars, crisps and sweets are not allowed for the children to have as their morning time snack. Therefore, could the children please bring in either a piece of fruit, a healthy snack bar or buy fruit from our fruit shop at a cost of 20p. Palm class also receive a free fruit snack. There is always water for your child to drink but we also have a space in the classrooms for water bottles so your child can sip during the day and keep hydrated (which helps our children concentrate better!)
Dinner Money/Consent Forms/Money for Outings
Please ensure that all money and consent forms are handed to me (class teacher), or to your child to hand to me, in a sealed, labelled envelope.
If any of you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer in school, please let us know. If there is anything that you need to know or discuss with me please let me know as soon as possible. I am usually available at the end of the school day.
Regards,
Jamie Taylor
