Madrono Class 2011 - 2012
17 January 2012
Dear Parents/Carers
It’s great being in Madrono class!
What an exciting Autumn term we had learning all about the Romans and gladiators. Thank you for all your help and support, especially making the gladiator clothing. We spent a lot of time looking at what it is like to be a good learner. This term we are going to be having a focus on the learning to concentrate during independent work and knowing more about where we are in our learning and how to make the next step. Please talk with your child about their learning each day.
Please come into school and help
If you would like to help in class at any time please come into school and speak with us. You might want to hear some children read, help with artwork or ICT. You may have a specific skill which you could share with the children at some point. We would welcome any parent support in class!
Homework
Homework will be given out on Wednesdays or Fridays and will be collected in the following Wednesday or Friday.
This will give the children an opportunity for you to ask any questions about their homework during the week. In addition to the ‘What’s New’ homework books, it is important for your child to read every day and talk about what they have read. We would like to ask you to listen to your child read every night for at least 15 minutes.
Please complete your child’s reading record. We are only managing to collect 6 reading records each week out of 22! Let’s improve that number.
Our homework overview for this term is linked to our topic of Water. Activities will include: making pirate clothing, retelling ghost ship stories, water research and ship games.
Maths
We have been revising how to tell the time this past week. To keep this very important life skill in place PLEASE ask your child to tell the time as many times as possible in a day. You could also ask questions such as: The time now is 7:25am, we have to leave in 20 minutes, what time will it be when we leave? Your child will also have a times table target to learn. Please help them with their chanting and ask them random questions e.g. 5 lots of 6, double 9.
PE
Your child will need their PE kit at school most days. They should bring it to school on Monday and leave it in the cloakroom until Friday. Please note that for safety reasons jewellery should not be worn. If your child is unable to do PE on any day could you please let us know in the morning or send a note with your child. For swimming, we expect all children who are at school to be well enough to swim and we require a letter from your GP if they are to be excused for medical reasons.
We are unable to accept verbal explanations from children alone. It’s getting cold so please ensure your child has a warm top, gloves and hat.

Snack time
As Dunkirk is a ‘Healthy School’ we would like to just give a gentle reminder that chocolate bars, crisps and sweets are not encouraged for the children to have as their morning time snack. Therefore, could the children please bring in either a piece of fruit, a healthy snack bar or buy fruit from our fruit shop. There is always water for your child to drink but we also have a space in the classrooms for water bottles so your child can sip during the day and keep hydrated (which helps our children concentrate better!)
Remember we are always in school so please come and see us at 3:30pm if you need to talk about your child.
Yours Sincerely
Marie Gallagher and Heidi Hollis
