Latest News 15 May 2012

We have been learning loads in the last 2 weeks...We have continued reading myths and legends, and exploring them through drama. We have even learnt the story of Icarus and Daedalus, and can perform it out loud. In maths we have got to grips with addition and subtraction and how to use one fact and get three more! We've been to the Djanogly Art Gallery and this week we're off to Wollaton Hall, to perform our dance for the World Record Attempt, so make sure you have a look at our visits page. We are still doing sports and ball skills with the team from Forest and learning about the Olympics with Miss Taylor.

Latest News 3 May 2012

This week we have been reading loads more Myths and Legends, and even finding some scary Aboringinal legends from Australia.
We have had session 2 with the Forest team, and 12 children went to Djanogly City Academy to take part in a Y3 indoor athletics competition.
This afternoon we are going to the Djanogly Art Gallery at Lakeside Arts Centre to view the Edward Burra exhibition, before we start to create some artwork in response to it.

Welcome back to school, after the Easter holdiays! We have a busy term ahead of us. It has started brilliantly with Parmjit helping us out with our literacy unit of Myths and Legends, a visit to Cineworld and two players from Nottingham Forest leading sports workshops every Wednesday.

Work with Parmjit

This week we've had a puzzle to solve. Parmjit found a lost book with many pages missing. We had to put the pages into an order and think about what pages might be missing. We came up with so many possibilities. We've done lots of imaginative thinking, and creative work to try and solve the puzzle...but no-one will ever know.

Science

Finally the sun came out this week and we could go and investigate shadows outside. Look at the funny shapes we made with our bodies in the sunshine, to make some silly shadows!

Making books with Miss Claire

This week we have been making books with Miss Claire. We have been using different materials to make our books. Maple class have enjoyed making our own books and some of them are big, and some are small. We have learnt new ways to make books like folding paper, origami, cutting and zig zag folds to make books, maps, information books, pop up books, scrolls, story books, instruction booklets and leaflets.

Balls to Poverty

Every Tuesday for 6 weeks, Maple class get to work with the students on the Balls to Poverty team. We play football and tag rugby. We enjoy playing these teams games with them. Our session is split into half, where we talk about and do activities about poor people in Africa, inspiring people all around the world, and then get sports practice on the playground. Please remember to bring your PE kit.

Tennis Coaching

We have been lucky enough to receive Tennis Coaching this term, by an expert from the LTA. Every Wednesday we get one hour professional coaching. Maple class are thoroughly enjoying this and 4 children will be chosen to represent Maple class at a Mini Tournament at Julbille Campus on Friday 10th February.
UPDATE: At the tennis tournament the team of 4 Year 3 children from Dunkirk Primary School won bronze award. Well Done to them!

Work with Parmjit

With Parmjit we have been working with paper to make our own paper worlds. We could only use paper, no sellotape, no glue sticks, no scissors, or no colours. We could only fold the paper.
Most of the children wrote their stories down for homework. They were all fantastic and I can't wait for more inspiring work from Parmjit.

Look at what we've been growing this week!

Miss Claire has been helping out with this term's science topic - Helping Plants Grow - by helping us to make grass heads and cress heads in the classroom. The cress smells good enough to eat, and the grass is just starting to sprout through the tights. All the grass heads are super and each has a character of its very own. We have also been learning about the life cycle of a flowering plant and we have been looking for signs of life in the nature garden.

Reading challenge

Maple class are all enthusiastically reading at home and making sure that their reading records have been filled in by a parent or carer. Mrs Hollis set a challenge to get 10 days reading recorded before half term, and over half of the children in Maple Class are well on the way to being awarded a super reader award.
Keep it up Maple.

Pollution topic

Our pollution topic has been very popular this term. The children are expert pollution spotters and we have been out and about looking for pollution in our local area. This week the children in Maple class are making information leaflets about different kinds of pollution, and what can be done about it. They are excellent writers, using different punctuation, sentence openers and connectives.
