Welcome to Cedar Class
January 2012
Dear Parents/Carers
We would like to wish you a belated Happy New Year and let you know what your child will be studying this term.
It has been great to see that all of the children have come back to school with a very positive and enthusiastic attitude. We hope that with your support and their hard work, many targets can be achieved this year. Please remember that if there are any matters you would like to discuss with us, one of us will be available to meet with you most afternoons at 3.30pm.
We have taken as our theme this term - the “Importance of Water.” This topic will be embedded into both our literacy and our drama sessions. The children will explore the topic through writing, drama and art. Much of the children’s homework will be based around this subject.
The other areas of the curriculum are as follows:
Spanish
As Miss Gallagher’s specialist subject is Spanish, she will be integrating the teaching of Spanish into the curriculum. As we looked at the story of Little Red Riding Hood last term in Literacy we have decided to look at the Spanish version this term!
Textile Project
Our class will be involved with the Textile Project where the children develop their creative ideas and learn new skills. We would be unable to complete our project without the invaluable help of some parents and grandparents. However, more help is still required, so if you could spare any time it would be greatly appreciated. Expert sewing skills are not essential, just willing hands.
Homework
The homework has changed slightly this term. Each child has been given a Learning Log. This is to encourage the children to spend some time not only writing but also illustrating their work. Please spend some time with your child looking at the homework question and encouraging them to complete it and return it to the Teacher.
Class homework is usually given out on a Friday and the children are expected to return it, completed, by the following Wednesday. Children that do not hand in their homework will be asked to complete it during break time every Friday.
We would also appreciate your help in ensuring that your child reads every day for at least 15 minutes and also talk to them about what they have read. Please make sure that their reading records are up to date with the current book listed and a review written of the previous book.
PE
Your child will need their PE kit at school most days. They should bring it to school on Monday and leave it in the cloakroom until Friday. Please note that for safety reasons jewellery should not be worn. If your child is unable to do PE on any day could you please let us know in the morning or send a note with your child. We are unable to accept verbal explanations from children alone.
Work to be covered this term:
Literacy: Persuasive Writing, creating leaflets and adverts
Numeracy: Times Tables, Fractions, Time, Measurements

Snack time
As Dunkirk is a ‘Healthy School’ we would like to just give a gentle reminder that chocolate bars, crisps and sweets are not allowed for the children to have as their morning time snack. Therefore, could the children please bring in either a piece of fruit, a healthy snack bar or buy fruit from our fruit shop at a cost of 20p. Please can you send your child with a named water bottle so your child can keep hydrated and therefore concentrate better.
Dinner Money/Consent Forms/Money for Outings
Please ensure that all money and consent forms are handed to us (class teachers) in a sealed, labelled envelope.
Finally, if any of you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer in school, please let us know. Also, if you have any worries or concerns we are available to discuss these by appointment after school on most days.
Yours Sincerely
Linda Brooks and Clare Maddock
